Some of you may have noticed that the more time I spent in Lisbon this year, the more obsessed I became with the city's patterned tiles. First that obsession manifested itself in an online project called TILEWATCH where I collected 250 photographs and drawings of ceramic tiles over my six months in Portugal. Well my tile-inspired endeavours didn't stop there, a printed project is just off the press! The print edition of TILEWATCH takes the form of a tile-spotting trail that brings you on a tour of two of Lisbon's central neighbourhoods - Alfama and Mouraria - highlighting a number of tiles along the way.
The trail begins in Campo de Santa Clara in Alfama (very close to the Panteão Nacional and Lisbon's flea market, Feira da Ladra) and leads you through windy streets to Largo do Intendente in Mouraria. The route takes about an hour to complete, and while 11 tiles are highlighted on the map, there are many many more to spot along the way. The reverse of the map includes plotted paper so you can draw some of the other patterns that you find.
The map is A3 and folds to A5. It is digitally printed in four very Lisbon colours: yellow, peach, blue and a soft terracotta (thanks to GP Digital for doing a great job on that). TILEWATCH is available to buy online through my shiny new shop. It will also feature on the Keep Sketch stall at the Irish Design Shop's Christmas pop-up shop this Saturday (1 December). So if you'd like to see it in the flesh, call in to the Irish Architectural Archive on Saturday between 10am and 6pm, and with it you can see work from over 20 other designers and makers while enjoying your first mulled wine of the season :)
